Just happened to think about whether a well is common for the use in the city in other countries.

Here, the old part of Tokyo, the old wells are kept working in preparation for the use as an emergency water source at the time of a quake. Setagaya, the setting place of Wind-Up, is used to be a farming suburb and is known for having lots of wells in the ward; logically, there could be some dried-up ones nearby the Toru Okada’s place.
